Dear Earth:
Thank you very much for the comfortable life I live everyday. I have lived in Japan peacefully since I was born. I can eat, study, play, sleep, and be happy everyday. I have taken in for granted so far.
But it is thanks to my parents supporting me, and also thanks to YOU, Earth. I have begun to appreciate you more and more. You are like a mother to us humans.
On March eleventh, a big earthquake and tsunami struck East Japan. The nuclear power plant there was damaged. I think that these indirectly were man-made disasters, not natural ones. I think that you were angry with us and made it happen. We used too much electricity and we damaged nature and our environment before the earthquake hit. Now, people in Tohoku are suffering, but you suffered more I suppose. We have done bad things to you. I am very sorry and please forgive us for what we have done.
So I have thought about what we can to for you from now on;
First is saving power. Not only large companies and stores, but each and every person can make an effort to save power. For example, we can set our air-conditioners at twenty-eight degrees, or we can use fans instead.
Second is to not waste things. For instance, bringing our own bags for shopping is being eco-friendly. I always try to do this and encourage others to do so.
Third is to recycle our clothing. That way we won`t have to buy new clothes or shoes so often.
There are many other things we can do to help and to show our thanks.
Contrary to these things, we humans have actually been damaging you, Mother Earth. If all the people in Japan and around the world cooperated to save you, the effect would be amazing. Without forgetting the appreciation we have for you, we will try our best to do good and useful things. This I promise you!
I think now is the time to return a favor to you. I am sure the world will be united and become “one” someday. Please be patient until we can return you to what you used to be like. I love you Earth.
Yours Sincerely
Junna Tsukasaki
